Up Hamburg Berlin

A holiday in Germany

In October 2000 we spent a week's holiday in Germany. It was intended for us to catch the ferry between Harwich and Hamburg but unfortunately this also coincided with a time when the railways were very unpredictable. The end result was that we didn't get to the ferry in time but ended up staying in London on the Friday night and caught a flight on the Saturday from Heathrow to Hamburg. Thank god for lastminute.com !

We arrive on the Saturday lunchtime and spent the weekend in Hamburg. We stayed at a fantastic hotel called The Madison before setting off by train for Berlin on the Monday.

The hotel in Berlin can only be described as unique. The Hotel Kunstlerheim Luise in eastern Berlin is an artistic masterpiece, I can only recommend a look at the website, we stayed in the Oliver Jordan suite. Berlin was totally histrionic and well worth the wander around the old East Berlin sites and the old cold war relics. A lot of the city was being redeveloped when we visited and I think a further visit to see how things have turned out is well worth a visit in the next few years. We headed back to Hamburg by train on the Wednesday and stayed for a final night in Hamburg at the Radisson hotel, which was a bit a of monstrous high rise soaring up into the Hamburg skyline.

On Thursday we caught the English ferry back to Harwich, which was a far more successful trip in returning! Enjoy the Galleries....
